6061 and 6063 are both 6000-series aluminum alloys, which means they both use magnesium and silicon as their primary alloying elements. But the balance between those elements makes them behave quite differently in practice. They are not interchangeable.

What Makes 6061 Different
6061 has higher magnesium and silicon content than 6063, which gives it more strength. In T6 temper, 6061 has a tensile strength around 45,000 psi and yield strength around 40,000 psi. It machines cleanly with both HSS and carbide tooling, holds tolerances well, and is available in a wide variety of shapes — round bar, flat bar, plate, sheet, square bar.
6061 is the default aluminum alloy for machined parts. If a print calls for "aluminum" without a specific grade, 6061 is almost always the right interpretation. It also welds reasonably well with 4043 or 5356 filler, anodizes well, and is widely available.

6063 has lower strength than 6061 but is optimized for something different: extrudability and surface finish. The lower alloy content makes it flow better through extrusion dies, which allows manufacturers to produce complex cross-section profiles that would be difficult or impossible with 6061.
6063 also anodizes to a noticeably cleaner, brighter finish than 6061. The surface quality after anodizing is excellent, which is why 6063 dominates architectural aluminum. When the anodized appearance matters as much as the structural function, 6063 is the standard choice.
Machinability Comparison
Both alloys machine reasonably well, but 6061 is generally preferred for machined parts. It produces better chip formation at higher speeds and holds tighter tolerances more consistently. 6063 machines fine for simple operations, but for precision machined parts where surface finish and dimensional stability matter, 6061 is the better starting point.
Anodizing Comparison
This is where 6063 wins clearly. 6063 produces a cleaner, clearer anodized finish with better color consistency. 6061 anodizes well for functional (protective) anodizing, but the surface may show more variation in tone — especially noticeable on large flat surfaces or in decorative applications where color matching matters.
Strength Comparison
6061 is meaningfully stronger. If a structural or load-bearing application is stress-limited and you need maximum strength from the 6000-series family, 6061 is the choice. 6063 is adequate for light structural applications but should not be used where 6061 strength is required by design.
Availability
6061 is available in essentially every form: round bar, flat bar, plate, sheet, square bar, and some extrusions. 6063 is primarily available as extrusions in standard profiles. If you need a custom machined shape and you are starting from round bar or plate, you are almost certainly working with 6061.

Can I substitute 6063 for 6061?
For light-duty, non-structural applications, sometimes. But do not substitute without checking the strength requirements. 6063 is meaningfully weaker than 6061, and if the part was designed assuming 6061 properties, using 6063 may not meet the load requirements.
